Shirley Brown Garlick, age 92, passed away in Provo, UT on November 26, 2014. She left behind earthly cares and suffering to be joyfully reunited with her eternal companion, Glen William Garlick.
Shirley was born in North Ogden, UT on August 5, 1922 to George Edward and Maud Stahr Brown as the youngest of nine children. She had many fond memories of growing up on the family farm where she learned the value of hard work.
After graduating from Weber High School, Shirley attended Weber College. At the onset of World War II, she went to work at the Ogden Defense Depot and was later invited to go to Washington D.C. to work for the Quartermaster General, Dept. of the Army.
While in Washington D.C., Shirley met Glen, who was from Fairview, Utah and had recently returned from serving with the Army in Germany. She described him as "this handsome fellow who asked me to dance." Their love blossomed and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 10th, 1947.
Glen's work as a soil scientist with the U.S. government took them to Davenport, Washington, where their two sons, Lewis Glen and Brent Douglas were born. They subsequently lived in Ely and in Fallon, Nevada where she and Glen enjoyed a busy life raising their two sons. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many callings. She especially enjoyed working with the scouting program, and with her support, both of her sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. When the boys were older, Shirley returned to work for the government at the Naval Air Station in Fallon. When Glen retired, they moved back home to Utah, and settled in Springville.
Shirley and Glen had a wonderful life together and enjoyed their years in Springville as they met new friends and traveled to various sites around the country. Most of all, they made their home a place where their grandchildren always loved to visit, felt their loving kindness, and had lots of fun!
Glen passed away suddenly in 1990, and Shirley was left without her loving companion of 43 years. Even in this lonely time, she continued to reach out as a friend and a support to others. As always, she understood what mattered most; her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the central focus of her life. They will always honor and remember Grandma for her generosity, faithfulness, and unconditional love.
Shirley is survived by her sister Mildred Brown Richards of Ogden, UT, her sons Lewis (Sharon) of Sacramento, Ca; Brent (Denice) of American Fork, UT; 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a grandson, Kevin Douglas Garlick.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South in Springville, UT. A viewing for family and friends will be held at the same location from 11:30 - 12:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the memorial service.
