Roger Dee West passed away peacefully on March 5, 2016. He was proud to have been born at home in Springville, Utah in 1934 to Bert and Leone West. Leone passed away when Roger was a boy, and he was raised by his new mother, Ida West, after his father remarried. He loved his siblings LaRee, Kenneth, and Carolyn. He attended BYU, where his greatest accomplishment was to have found his eternal companion, Allene Johnson. They were married in the Los Angeles Temple in 1956, and would have celebrated 60 years this June.
He descended from pioneer stock that came from England and settled in Utah to be closer to the gospel. He collected paintings, sculptures, and other items that reminded him of his heritage.
Dad was a faithful member of the LDS church and loved his many assignments and service opportunities. He loved serving in the various wards in which he lived, in addition to serving as a stake missionary and temple worker.
Dad served in the United States Navy for six years. This service allowed him to travel throughout the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Apache. He worked in business, managing a commercial collections office, and was respected by his professional peers and co-workers.
Mom and Dad's journeys took them to Southern California, Northern California, and back to Utah to retire. Together they were blessed with four children: Jeff West (Colleen), Cindy Dunford (Ronald), Kim West, and Ben West. They have 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren whom he loved and they loved him. We loved his hugs and kisses.
He liked people and quickly engaged in conversations with those he met. He laughed often and always appreciated a humorous story. He enjoyed working with his hands in his garden, restoring furniture, and could fix most anything in "Roger's Workshop." He was gentle, fun, hardworking, loyal to his family, and dearly loved by those close to him.
The family would like to express our sincerest thanks to the staff at Courtyard at Jamestown - Memory Care Wing, especially Tammy, Wanda, and all the employees who so lovingly cared for Roger. We would also like to thank Paige, Jessica and Christian from Comfortworx Hospice for their care and compassion during the last few months of his life.
A visitation will be held at Wheeler Mortuary in Springville (211 East 200 South) on Thursday, March 10, 2016 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. A Memorial service will be held the next day on March 11th at the same location at 10:00am, with interment to follow at the Springville Evergreen
