Richard Meyer, age 63 passed away Friday, June 10, 2011 in Murray, UT at the IHC Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 21, 1947 in Portsmouth, VA to Robert James Meyer and Kathleen Eleanor Doremus Meyer, but moved shortly afterwards to Lakewood, California. Several years later, the family spent a couple of years in Guam and then moved to Ridgecrest, CA where Richard later graduated from high school. He married Jolyn Christiansen on May 2, 1980 in the Los Angeles LDS temple.
Richard served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. After nine years in the service, he went to Brigham Young University and then decided he wanted to go on a mission for his church. In order to earn the money for his mission, he traveled to a remote radar site in Greenland, where he worked and saved money for a year before being called to the Germany Munich Mission where he served from 1976-1978. He returned to Brigham Young University and eventually earned his MBA. His career took the family to Texas, Arizona, Montana, the United Arab Emirates, California, and Utah. He also taught business in Thailand and Germany for a brief time. Richard enjoyed traveling, shooting, hiking, teaching, reading, watching BYU football and driving his Jeep through the wadis and deserts of the United Arab Emirates. He was an excellent husband, father and grandfather and loved his family dearly. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many different callings, but his favorite was as a teacher. He especially loved teaching the Gospel Doctrine class in Sunday School.
