Richard Clinton Carter, age 83, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on October 27, 2013. He was born January 2, 1930 in Sutherland, Nebraska to William Glen and Nellie Pearl Bassett Carter. Dick married his high school sweetheart, Lou Jene Mountford, on July 22, 1950 in Elko, NV.

Dick graduated from Springville High School in 1949 where he was the quarterback on the football team. His love of sports continued throughout his life, volunteering his time and talents to youth sports in the city. He was involved in baseball - from Little League to American Legion - where he coached, umpired, and served on league presidencies. He and his friends founded the Springville Youth Football League, where he acted as the first league commissioner. He was always ready to toss a ball with anyone wanting to play.

Dick worked as a steelworker at United States Steel Geneva Works for over 35 years. After retiring from Geneva, he worked in the shop at Valley Asphalt. He also belonged to the Utah Army National Guard 116th Engineering Company. After 20 years of service, he retired as a Master Sergeant.

Dick loved spending time with his family and throwing big holiday gatherings to bring them all together. He took pride in his home and spent countless hours manicuring his yard and tending to the beautiful flowers in his garden. Living against the mountain, he loved watching the wildlife in his backyard. His family and friends will forever remember his undaunting work ethic, his quick wit, and his big heart.

Survivors include his wife and their four children: Patrice, Springville; James (Jill), Springville; Cari (Gregory) Anderson, Orem; and Jeffrey (Kim), Mapleton. He is also survived by siblings, Morten "Pete" and Barbara Clark. Richard leaves behind twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his mother, father, and his siblings, Opal Nielsen, Norman, Norris, Claude, and Gailord.

A viewing will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 6 to 8pm at Wheeler Mortuary located at 211 E 200 S in Springville. Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service to be held at 11am on Saturday, November 2, at Springville Evergreen Cemetery located at 1997 S. 440 E.
