Reed Mark Johnson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully on September 5, 2010, at the age of 88, following a sudden stroke. He was born October 13, 1921 to Myrtle and William Marcus Johnson of Spanish Fork. He was born fifth of 11 children followed closely by his identical twin brother Ray.
Reed grew up in Spanish Fork, and was very proud of his Icelandic heritage.
As a part of a large family he worked hard to help them survive through the Depression. His father often acquired beet thinning jobs for him as a summer job to help out the family.
He served in the US Army during WWII along with his four brothers, Roland, Blaine, Glenn, and Ray, spending the majority of his time in Hawaii. Reed also served in Korea in the Artillery where he earned a bronze star. His military training was a precursor to his life's work in the Utah National Guard, from where he retired as a Colonel and Chief of Staff, October 1976 at the age of 55. He also served several tours of duty with the National Guard Bureau in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
After retiring from the National Guard, he obtained employment at Security Title and Abstract Co. where he worked until the age of 87.
Upon discharge from the army after WWII he adjusted to civilian life by entering BYU, where he graduated in 1949 with a major in accounting and business administration. He loved to play the trumpet from an early age and while attending BYU he played in a dance band named the "Talk of the Town." Reed was also president of the local music union.
In the meantime he established his courtship with his sweetheart Jacqueline Senior. They were married October 1, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with one daughter, Tracy, on March 31, 1954. Aside from brief military moves, Reed and Jackie spent the majority of their life together in Springville, living in their current home for over 40 years.
Reed was very active in civic affairs. He was a director and later president of Riverside Country Club and president of Rotary Club. Golfing was his game of choice and he loved to play every chance he got.
He dearly loved his family and took every opportunity to talk about them. Reed was friendly and outgoing and cared about the lives of others. He made friends easily and carried those friendships throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Blaine, Alan, Roland, and Glenn. His sister Norma passed away only hours after Reed. He is survived by his beautiful wife Jacqueline Senior Johnson, loving daughter Tracy (Michael) Huntington, and beloved grandchildren Scott Huntington, Heather (Brett) Daniel, Jana (Chris) Johnson, Ashley (Jared) Mitchell, nine great grandchildren.
