Phyllis Weight Crowder, 88, formerly of Springville UT, died of causes incident to age, Monday April 7, 2008. She was born on February 8, 1920, in Springville, Utah to Ernest Gilbert and Belva Diamond Weight.
Phyllis, the oldest of six children, grew up in Springville where she attended Springville High School. She later went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree from BYU in 1943, majoring in drama and speech. She joined the U. S. Navy during WWII and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. After leaving the military, Phyllis then studied and acted at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. She later worked as an entertainment coordinator for the US Army in Europe, Seattle, and in New York City where she met her sweetheart, Ray. They later married, September 4, 1958, and moved to San Diego where they lived for 35 years raising their family. In 1996, due to Ray's failing health and later passing, they moved to Springville to be close to her siblings. In 2003 until her death, Phyllis lived in Canton (Atlanta), Georgia with her daughter and family.
She was dedicated to serving in the LDS Church and was known as one who gave her all in whatever calling she had. She especially loved her callings teaching in the arts and music. She excelled at writing and directing road-shows and ward skits. She served a number of years as a stake drama director, Primary chorister, cultural refinement teacher, and councilor in the Relief Society. She also loved and always served, until age 87, as a visiting teacher. Her greatest joy and accomplishment was being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Phyllis is listed in the register at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Crowder Ensign (Jonathan) Canton Georgia; three grandchildren: Megan, Connor, & Ansley; A sister: Dorothy Stewart (Alan) Springville; three brothers, Kae Weight (Janice) Springville, Vernon Weight (Betsy) Eskdale Utah, Roger Weight (Lorraine) Seattle Washington. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest & Belva Weight, husband, Raymond U. Crowder Jr., grandson, David Ensign, and brother, Creed Weight.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, Utah. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville.
