1924 ~ 2013
Phyllis Bird Johnson, age 88, of Springville, Utah, passed away peacefully at her daughters home in Spanish Fork, Utah, on April 12, 2013, surrounded by her children. She was a beloved mother and grandmother.
Phyllis was born at home in Mapleton, Utah, on May 19, 1924. She was the youngest of three children born to Richard Steele and Ella Finch Bird. Sh
e grew up in Mapleton and graduated from Springville High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Calvin C. Johnson, on June 28, 1943 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
She had a wonderful childhood playing with her cousins and riding her horse "Queenie". She lost her mother at the age of 17 and had to assume the household chores of the cooking and cleaning for her family. Phyllis loved to raise roses, be with friends and family, travel, play golf and was "the life of the party". She also loved her dear friends at the Springville Senior Center.
Together, Cal and Phyllis raised their five children in Mapleton, Utah, Twin Falls and Burley, Idaho. Their home was full of laughter, fun, good food and serious card games. One of the great joys of her life were Mom's many friends, and her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to help others.
In her younger days she was a secretary at the Geneva Steel Mills. Later on she was a favorite substitute teacher in the Burley Idaho schools. She was much beloved by her students because of all the fun they had when she was their teacher. When Cal and Phyllis retired and returned to Springville she was a volunteer at the Utah Regional Medical Center for several years.
Phyllis was a faithful member of the LDS church and served in many callings. She looked forward to her joyous reunion with her much loved husband, Calvin, her father and mother.
Phyllis is survived by her five children: Linda (Rolan) Senior, Clark (Jonnie) Johnson, Janet (J. Dee) May, Mary Jane Tinnes, Caleen (Michael) Stevens, 19 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Calvin C. Johnson, her parents and her two brothers, Fred and Stan.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Springville Stake Center, 245 S 600 S, Springville, Utah. Friends may call at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E 200 S, Springville, on Friday, April 19, from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:30 a. m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
