Oneita Irene Burnside Sumsion Brady Obituary Written by Oneita
Well, I guess (or looks like) it's my turn. I've been telling my kids for years that I have gone to seed and it's time that I was planted. My bucket list has long been filled, so I just kicked that bucket. Mother Earth, here I come. Ole Jim better be there to meet me or I'll be mighty mad at him.
Oneita Burnside Sumsion Brady, born in Colorado, but grew up in Fairview, Utah with great parents John C. Burnside and Thelma Graham Burnside. I had brothers Bill, Jesse, John, George, and sisters Lorraine and Barbara. We've had lots of fun and laughs together.
I loved school and tried to excel; was first female to be student body president of Fairview Junior High; also co-valedictorian.
Attended North Sanpete High, where I won honors in English, the S award pin, and numerous other things, including yearbook editor and one of six students to graduate with highest honors.
Won scholarship to University of Utah. Loved living at Beehive House. Later, completed Associates Degree in Genealogy Technology at BYU. Graduated from BYU with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism at age 89.
Then James Sumsion entered my life on a blind date. He swept me off my feet and rushed me to the Manti Temple where we were married. We were together 51 years until he died of bone cancer. Four children; James Edwin, Stephanie, John Richard, Philip William (deceased); 14 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren.
Worked as editor of Springville Herald. Also wrote and edited for Provo Daily Herald. Won numerous local, state, and national awards for writing, editing, poetry and photography.
Our lives were devoted to family, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Various callings. Jim was Bishop twice. We served missions to England, Nauvoo, Springville Family History Center, and Provo MTC (Missionary Training Center).
Activities included restoration of an old stone house made out of Manti Temple rubble rock; President Utah Press Women; family history; Sunday dinners, wiener roasts, Disneyland trips.
After Jim died, a childhood friend, Milton Brady, came calling. We married for time in Manti Temple. Married 15-16 years, until his death in 2019.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 245 South 600 East, Springville, Utah. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:30-1 p.m. before the services at the church. Burial will be held in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
