1917 ~ 2013
Merle C. Curtis, 95, passed away on the morning of Feb. 8, 2013, at the Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield, Utah. She was born April 24, 1917, to Joseph William and Lilly Ann Loy Chapple in Ucon, Idaho. She attended schools in Spanish Fork, graduating from Spanish Fork High School in 1935. Upon graduation, she achieved her license from Hollywood Beauty College of Cosmetology.
Merle met and married the love of her life Kenneth Courtland Curtis on Jan. 5, 1935, and later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple, on Oct. 12, 1937. They spent 63 wonderful years together before Ken's passing in 1997. She operated a beauty shop in her basement for 30 years then to travel with Ken, as he worked construction, as a cement finisher.
Merle was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served in many different capacities. From the time she was a young child, she spent her life serving others. She loved to garden and grew beautiful vegetables-most which were given away to friends, neighbors and family. She was a great cook, always wanting to feed you if you came to visit. She has resided with her daughter Kathy in Monroe, Utah for the past 8 years.
Merle was very proud of her posterity. Twelve grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren fondly call her Grandma Great or Grandma Merlo. She is survived by one son, Alan Loy (Carol) Curtis, of Springville, Utah, one daughter, Kathy (Rick) Orr, of Monroe, Utah and daughter-in-law Doris (Robert) Curtis, of Elko, Nev. She also has one living sister, Janet (Kirk) Jameson, of Holladay, Utah, and sisters-in-law, Thecae (Joe) Chapple, of Aberdeen; Idaho, Juanita Curtis (Gene) Mower and Cecile (Hughes) Curtis, both of Springville, Utah. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her children Jeanine, Merrill Don, and Robert Kenneth, one grandson, Michael Richard Orr, one granddaughter, Christine Curtis, and one great grandson, Anthony Peterson,. She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters, along with their mates, Frank, Joe, Loy, Mark, Jack, Bert, Margaret, Mary Ellen, Norma and Anna Jean and infant sister Dorothy.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday Feb. 15, 2013 at 12:00 Noon, in the Springville West 8th Ward LDS Ward Chapel, 878 W Center (East Chapel) Springville, Utah. Family and friends may attend a viewing from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the chapel previous to the services. There will be no viewing the night before. Interment will be held at the Springville City Cemetery 200 West 400 South under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary.
