M. Blair Sargent

July 23, 1926 — May 15, 2016

Merle Blair Sargent was born July 23, 1923 in Spanish Fork, Utah to David Merle and Oleah Huff Sargent.  He lived in Springville and attended Lincoln, Springville Jr. High and graduated from Springville High School and L.D.S. Seminary.  In school, Blair was active in tennis, basketball and student government.

Blair served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He served in the South Pacific and Okinawa in the infantry division until he was wounded in action.

Blair graduated from B.Y.U. in 1951 with a degree in Accounting and Business and worked as an accountant for Springville City.  Blair spent the majority of his life in civil service as a U.S. Postal Worker in Springville for over 30 years.  He retired from the Post Office in 1982.

Blair married Dickie Jane Huntington in June of 1952 in the Manti Temple.  They were lifelong residents of Springville.  He was active in the community and served on the city council as a Chairman of the Art Board.

Blair was an active member of the L.D.S. Church.  He served as a ward clerk in the 1 st , 8 th and 12 th Ward; a counselor in his ward and BYU bishoprics; as the regional athletic director for Colorado, New Mexico and Utah; a High Counselor in the Kolob Stake; a temple worker in the Provo Temple for 15 years; a mission as an employment specialist; home teacher; young men’s president; and served in the family history center.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was the President for the Utah and Idaho Board of Directors.  Blair was an avid golfer and golfed on over 200 courses.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dickie Jane Sargent; sisters and brothers: Ruth (LaMar) Payne of Woods Cross; Janice Weight of Springville; Quinn (dec) Sandra of Tooele; David (Martha) of Springville and Gloria Collins of Santaquin.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 at 1 p.m. in the Kolob 8 th Ward Chapel at 840 S. 400 E. in Springville.  There will be a viewing held Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S., Springville and Friday at the church one hour prior to the services.  Burial will be in the Historic Springville City Cemetery will military rites by the American Legion.
