Marcus Walter Johnson, 87, slipped quietly from this earth to join loved ones on the other side of the veil early on Monday, November 23rd. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Born in Springville on June 20, 1922 to Thora Miner (Witney) and Einer Johnson, Marcus was raised by his mother in a close knit extended family. He lived next door to many of his cousins and worked and played with them daily. He attended and graduated from Springville schools. Marcus was proud all his life to be from Springville, although he later lived in Provo, Salt Lake City, and St. George.
Marcus loved life and lived it to its fullest. He was a lifelong fan of all sports. He skied weekly far into his seventies. He also enjoyed golf, bowling and watching BYU football (Go Cougs-beat the Utes). He was also known to be a very graceful dancer. Marcus had a quick smile and always a line or two to brighten things up, you always knew when he was doing well, because he would say, "I'm better than everybody," with a twinkle in his eye.
At age twenty, Marcus married Catherine Holley in San Diego, California before shipping off to the Pacific to serve in the Marine Corp. He drove an amphibious tractor and received a purple heart for his service. Many of his service buddies became life long friends. After the service, Marcus and Catherine returned to Springville, where Marcus was a plumber. He later opened his own plumbing business with his son Craig. Marcus and Catherine were divorced after many years of marriage. He later married Arlene Kidd, and they were sealed in the St .George LDS temple. He spent many happy years with Arlene and greatly enjoyed being "adopted" into her large family.
Marcus will be missed by his sister, Bonnie Prestwich, two children, Craig (Janice) Johnson, Salt Lake City, and Holly Stansfield, Pleasant Grove, former son-in-law Jerry Stansfield, 8 grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his best friend, Arlene, his mother and father, and a sister, Marva.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S., Springville. There will be a viewing held at the mortuary Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
