Lula Davis Garrett, 92, passed away peacefully to rejoin her husband, February 10, 2010. Her family was by her side, as "he came to get me".
Lula was born in Salem, Utah on October 21, 1917 to Willie Lars and Harriett Coombs Davis. She was the third child of four children born to her parents. She grew up in rural Utah, as her family worked the land farming. She learned to work hard.
As a young girl, she experienced The Great Depression. Having meager resources made a permanent impression in her demeanor. She was thrifty and frugal her entire life, yet she was always willing to share what she had with others, giving what she could.
Lula was a life long active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had a love and respect of God and her church. She was devoted to living a righteous life. She served many years in the Primary and Relief Society. Her life was centered around service to others. She was empathetic and she had a very gentle spirit.
She married tall and handsome Fabin Garrett in the Manti Temple when she was 19 years old. She and her husband had 4 children together, Myrna (Richard) Eberle, Betty Jo (James) Wiley, Kay Lynn Kenny and Susan Hale. Her heart was happiest at her home. Her youngest daughter recalled 'mother' singing as she made her family breakfast in the mornings. "Lula really just wanted to be near her husband with whatever he was doing." stated her son-in-law, James. This resulted in may hours spent in the mountains camping and fishing. Family was paramount in her life.
Lula did have interests of her own. She was a member of Utah Daughter of the Pioneers. She spent years researching, collecting and compiling her family genealogy. She treasured this and was enthusiastic about telling and sharing with family. Genealogy was a passion. She kept a daily journal for 25+ years. She always had African violets that she tended, and for a period of time she has a passion for making rag rugs. She delighted when she could take a family member into her back room and let them sort through her stack of completed rugs. She offered one rug for each birthday or anniversary. Many of her rag rugs still adorn the homes of her friends and family. She also enjoyed sending cards in the mail. No birthday or milestone went unacknowledged by a card and small token by grandma. The only thing that generated her ire was not cashing a check that she had offered.
Lula and Fabin celebrated heath 50th Wedding Anniversary, but shortly thereafter, Fabin became ill and died. Lula endured 20 years without the love of her life. Lula was a devoted wife and mother. Their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have had diversified interests and may accomplishments of their own. Lula was supportive and encouraging of each of them. Her ever ready phrase of "I'm so proud of you" was only a heartbeat away from any positive effort. Lula's life accomplishment was managing her home and sharing with others. Her family is her legacy, of which she was "very proud".
Lula was preceded in death by her son Kay Lynn (Kenny), several great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. She is survived by her favorite brother, Ervin; all three daughters and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
The family would like to extend thanks for the attention and care provided by hospice. We are especially grateful to Stacy, Dana, Hollie and Vickie. We would also like to thank Dr. Mark Penrod for concern and care expressed.
At Lula's request a viewing will be held at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E 200 S, Springville on Monday, February 15, 2010 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. She has requested donations to Primary Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers.
