Louise Christiansen Clyde

d. March 1, 2013

1918 ~ 2013

Louise Christiansen Clyde, 94, passed away on 5 March 2013 in Orem, Utah. She was a woman of strength, of character, and of goodnessa"beloved of her late husband, children, grandchildren, family, and friends. In the community she was recognized for her philanthropy and her willingness to serve others.

She was born a Christmas Eve baby in Beaver, Utah on 24 December 1918, the third daughter of Hans Anthon and Maud Ellen Orrock Christiansen. In 1930 her parents homesteaded North Creek where she and her sisters learned to work harda"to milk cows, to herd sheep and to do all other farm chores. Even though three brothers came along later to help, she had already developed a lifelong penchant for hard work.

Because the Christiansen family valued education, Louise was the Beaver High School valedictorian. This brought her a scholarship of $30 from Utah State Agricultural College, which along with her work at 20 cents per hour, paid for her tuition and other expenses. She graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Secretarial Science.

At Utah State she met Blaine Palfreyman Clyde, a civil engineering student. They married on 20 September 1940 in the St. George Temple in St. George, Utah. Upon graduation in 1941, they moved to Springville, where Blaine worked in his family's construction company, W.W. Clyde and Company. In the early years, Blaine supervised road work in Utah, Idaho, Arizona and Nevada, which necessarily taught Louise self-sufficiency as a "construction widow."

Her self-sufficiency served her well, with Blaine's early death in 1987. She was energetic and feisty, with wide-reaching interests: the political world, literature, gardening, quilting, college sports, but most importantly, the comings and goings of her family members. She taught her familya"children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren alikea"time-honored values, including honesty, hard work, discipline, serving others with commitment to Church, family, community and country.

Louise was a dedicated, lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Among many other responsibilities, she served as Relief Society President and Young Women's President. She also completed an LDS service mission at the Provo Tabernacle and did extraction work for the LDS Church for many years.

In the community, she served as a 4H leader, and as a member of the Foundation Board at Utah Valley University. Louise was a member of two clubs, the We Readers and the Cultural Arts Club and continued to attend those meetings into her nineties. She served as President of the Federated Women's Clubs and helped compile a scrapbook that won first place in the state contest.

Louise and Blaine lived modestly, giving back to their community with an emphasis on education. They established four different endowed scholarships at Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University and Utah State University, where over 100 students have been recipients. Blaine and Louise also donated many paintings and sculptures to the Springville Art Museum, with a major donation to help build the new wing. A gallery at the museum is named in their honor.

Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Blaine Palfreyman Clyde; infant son, John Hyrum Clyde; granddaughter, Mary Ann Carr; sisters, Maurine Christiansen Gale and Ione Christiansen Blair; survived by her children, Paul Blaine Clyde (Jeanette) of Cedar Hills, Utah; Dianne Carr (Wallace) of Springville, Utah; Barbara Robertson (John) of Orem, Utah; Wilford Wayne Clyde (Natalie) of Springville, Utah; Carl Christiansen Clyde (Heather) of Springville, Utah; 28 grandchildren and 62 great grandchildren; three brothers, Dan Anthon Christiansen (Nadine) of Oceanside, California; John Orrock Christiansen (Marie) and Robert Ogden Christiansen (Helen) of Beaver, Utah.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, 11 March 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Springville 3rd Ward chapel, 355 East Center Street, Springville, Utah.
