Lois Aileen (Brereton) Graves

Lois Aileen Brereton Graves of Springville, Utah passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born in Pleasant View (Provo), Utah on July 5, 1930, as the only daughter of four children to Richard Grant Brereton and Tella Boren Brereton. Lois was also blessed with another brother born to her step-father Leo Gardner and Tella B. Gardner.

In life, Lois exhibited many notable qualities, one of which was her ability to overcome challenges. From battling spinal meningitis at only a few months old, to dealing with the death of her father at the age of 10, Lois always overcame obstacles with a positive attitude and maintained her strong faith and testimony in Jesus Christ.

Lois was a dedicated worker from a young age. She spent her childhood helping on fruit and dairy farms with her mother, siblings, and stepfather, Leo Gardner. During her teenage years, she worked at the Academy Theatre, and B & H Pharmacy. She also served as the secretary of various high school clubs. It was at this time in her life she met her future husband, James Norman Graves, and asked him to the Sadie Hawkins Dance. One year later, on March 31, 1948, they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Family was always an important priority for Lois and she always expressed her love for her family through her actions. She dedicated her life to spending time with her children and grandchildren. Norman and Lois are the parents of seven children: daughters; Kathleen (Roy Evans), Susan (Lee Palmer); sons; David (Shellie), Richard (LaRayne), Robert (Cindy), Michael (Sann), and Bryan (Julie). They have 37 grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren in their sporting and cultural events. She also enjoyed vacationing with them in California, Yellowstone, Alaska, and Europe and even accompanied them on occasional fishing or deer hunting expeditions. One of her greatest desires was, “to leave this earth and my family feeling that I was worthy of their love” and “to say that I always tried my best…”.

Lois was patient, slow to anger, happy, always had a smile on her face, and lived what she taught. Along with all of these other qualities, she was known as one to continually give service. She served in many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in primary, scouting, young women, relief society, in the temple and genealogy center. She and her husband also served an LDS mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. She loved God and exemplified righteous and virtuous qualities. She touched the lives of many and helped all to feel valued while in her presence

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two siblings; Stanley Evan Brereton, Robert Eugene (Karla) Brereton. Also, Jeremy Evans (grandson) and Crue Stephen Crandall (great-grandson). She is survived by two brothers; Richard Grant (Jeanie), Melvin Leo (Marelle) Gardner. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law; Joyce Brereton, and Shirley Graves, as well as a large posterity.

A viewing will be held Sunday, April 1st at the Hobble Creek Stake Center, 495 South Canyon Road, Springville, UT from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Hobble Creek Stake Center with a viewing held prior from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, UT.
