Scott was born on August 9, 1929 on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, to John Alfred Marks and Dorothy Waters Eldon, both of whom are deceased. He passed away on February 26, 2012 from complications of pancreatic cancer and diabetes. He has one sibling, his brother, Bud (Charles). Scott always considered Hawaii his home. He loved the island beaches, going barefoot and the Aloha spirit. The family moved to Honolulu in 1941, where he attended Punahou High School, participating in sports and music. He graduated in June 1947, then attended Stanford University for two years. He transferred to UCLA and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and did postgraduate work. He married Mary Chisholm in 1949 and together they raised two fine sons, John and Robert. They divorced in 1977. Scott later met and married Freda Shurtliff in 1979 in Santa Ana, California. Their marriage was sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. They lived and worked in California until the summer of 1995, when they both retired to live in Springville, Utah.
Scott had engineering positions with various companies, most recently working as the Intellectual Properties Manager with McDonnell Douglas Space Systems, now a part of Boeing. He was well-liked by those he worked with and was noted for his strong work ethic.
Scott was a Master Mason and served for a year as the Master of the Seafaring Lodge in Newport Beach, California in 1975. He maintained his membership, but no longer had the time to be active when he joined the LDS Church in 1979, at age 49. In the Church he has held several positions, including: Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader (twice), Ward Clerk, Bishop's Counselor, Member of the Stake High Council and faithful Home Teacher. He most recently has served as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple for fifteen years, a calling he especially loved. He and Freda also served a church proselyting mission in Jacksonville, Florida in 2000-2001. Scott had a strong testimony of God, His son Jesus Christ and of the restored gospel.
Scott is survived by his wife, Freda; his brother, Bud (Betty); his two sons: John (Patricia) and Robert (Clare); five grandsons and their wives: Daniel (Veronica), David (Jin), Sean (Rachelle) and their adorable daughter, Stella Rose, Benjamin (Hana) and William. They all live in California. Scott enjoyed spending time with family, including his wife's sisters and their husbands. He was most appreciative of the love and friendship of Jo Farrer, Nancy and Harold Reynolds and Carolyn and Norman Faldmo.
Scott loved spending time with family at family reunions, impromptu visits, dinners and just "hanging out'" He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles and playing board and card games with friends and family. (He hated to lose!) He especially loved the ocean and once considered joining the Coast Guard. He spent time sailing with friends on the California coast, usually crewing for them. He enjoyed swimming and snorkeling in Hawaii, the Caribbean and really enjoyed cruising vacations with Freda, whether in Hawaii, the Caribbean, Alaska, The Panama Canal or Canada and New England. They enjoyed a final trip "Home" to Hawaii in December. Scott also had an irrepressible sense of humor and had a joke or a pun for every occasion. He had a most generous heart and always did whatever he could for those in need.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the LDS Chapel at 1440 E 900 S, Springville, UT, followed by burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville.
