Paul Hemingway passed away peacefully in his home the morning of January 25, 2009. He was born July 25, 1920, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Franklin George and Esther Eugenia Downie Hemingway. He married Mary Frances Snarr on November 3, 1944. They were later sealed in the St. George Temple on June 30, 1951. They were the parents of seven children: Bonnie and Dean Rowley of Springville; Dennis and Robyn Hemingway of Arlington, Texas; Linda Hemingway; Suzanne Hemingway of Springville; Carole and Kim Griffeth of Salt Lake City; Mary Kathleen "Kathy" and Mark Warner of Midvale, Utah and Margaret Raine of Springville.
Paul and his family lived in Salt Lake City until they moved to California when Paul was seven. He attended schools in Bakersfield and learned to swim in the ditch behind their home. Graduated from Kern County High School. He used to race bicycles and swam with the water polo and swimming teams earning many medals.
Paul met Mary at the home of mutual friends and they were married while Paul was home on leave. Paul and Mary made their first home in Bakersfield,
California. Paul worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a machinist until his retirement in 1981. After retirement he spent time working with his son Dennis overhauling engines in Hawaii. Paul and Mary were always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; his favorite calling was as a ward missionary when he served as a seventy. Paul always had a sense of humor and called everyone he didn't know 'George'. His children loved his Lilliput stories.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2001 and his daughter, Linda Frances in 1997, his father, mother and brother, Franklin. He is survived by his 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Also by his brothers: Robert & Ula of Alpine, Utah; Wayne & Lela of Bakersfield, CA; LeRoy & Neva of Santee, CA; and a sister, Barbara & Reid Nelson of Bakersfield, CA.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with a viewing before the funeral from 12:30 1:30 p.m. at the LDS Church 2557 S. Dalton Dr. Springville, Utah, with Bishop John Tanner conducting, under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary. Interment will be in the Historic Springville City Cemetery, 450 S. 200 West, Springville. He will be laid to rest next to his loving wife and his daughter, Linda.
