Kay Nelson Rasmussen

d. February 4, 2013

1927 ~ 2013

Kay Nelson Rasmussen passed away on February 4, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. Kay was born on August 7, 1927 in Redmond, Utah to Katie and Wilford Rasmussen. His mother passed away shortly after his birth and we rejoice in their long awaited reunion. Growing up, Kay was adventurous, and a little mischievous. Those qualities found him enlisting in the Navy at 17 and going to war. He loved the Navy! He continued there until 1966. He was a three war veteran; serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He also witnessed 2 atomic bomb tests and a hydrogen bomb test. He was so proud of his country and all those who serve.

On March 6, 1951 Kay married Barbara Humphrey. They were later sealed in the Los Angeles LDS temple. Together they had four children, Denise (Mike) Kelly, Diane (Barry) Walker, Mark and Katie (Neil) Jeppson. Kay, Barbara, Denise and Diane traveled the world with the military. They lived in Washington, California, Japan and Illinois before retiring and returning to Utah. Kay began a second career at BYU as Director of Mail Service. He loved his time there and especially his season BYU football and basketball tickets. In February, 1974 Barbara passed away from cancer. In October of that year he married Betty Mason Bredesen. He gained three more daughters, Kathy (Morris) Nelson, Jan (Rob) Allen and Pat (Gary) Fleming.

Kay loved his girls. He loved spending time with them and his grandchildren. Through his life there were many camping trips, adventures and still a little mischief. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Although his health declined these last ten years, he enjoyed the time it brought him with his girls. Each had a time to serve him.

Kay is survived by his daughters, twenty-eight grandchildren and fifty-eight great grandchildren and his sister, Camille Humphrey. He was preceded in death by Barbara, Mark and Betty, his brothers and sister, Lowell, Philo, Ellis, Grant, Rodney and LaRee, his son-in-law Rob, grandson Ryan and great grandson, Landon.

We appreciate the help and comfort given these last two months by our nurses from Hearts for Hospice.

The funeral will be held Saturday, February 9 at 11 a.m. in the Lake Mountain Chapel, 88 West Harbor Parkway in Saratoga Springs. Viewings will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary in Springville and at the Lake Mountain First ward prior to the service from 10-10:45 a.m.
