1923 ~ 2012
Karl Harrison Measom, age 89 of Payson, UT, passed away August 16, 2012, at the Parkway Health Center in Payson, UT. He was born in Springville, UT on May 17, 1923, the son of Charles Henry and Helen Harrison Measom.
He married LaVerne Kelsey in Spanish Fork on January 20, 1943. They were sealed in June of 1958 in the Manti Temple.
He left high school when he was 17 and joined the Navy. This was Feb. 14, 1941. He was 1 day out of Honolulu when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He served on the cruiser USS Northampton, where he was in 13 major battles. His ship was sunk in the Guadalcanal in Dec. of 1942. He was put on leave to go to Boston for a new ship. On the way, he stopped in Spanish Fork and married his sweetheart LaVerne. They made their home in Springville.
Karl became active in the LDS Church. He was a Scout Master for 35 years. He earned the Silver Beaver and the Second Miler award. He loved this calling very much. He became a worker in the Provo Temple, was a Stake Missionary for 1 year, and served as a Second Counselor in the Bishopric. He loved every calling he had.
He retired from the Tooele Army Depot. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, and traveling, spending winters in Arizona after he retired. He also loved to square dance. His greatest joy in life was his family.
Karl is survived by his wife of 69 years, LaVerne Kelsey Measom; his five children: Karlene (Larry) Capps, Manila, UT; Lila Ree Branan, Elk Ridge, UT; Ron (Ann) Measom, Springville, UT; Barry (Satsuko) Measom, Memphis, TN and Darren (Janet) Measom, Spanish Fork, UT; 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 11 great, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: Max and Jack Measom and 1 grandson, Lonnie Groo.
Funeral services will be held on Monday August 20, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, 211 E 200 S, Springville, UT. Friends may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mortuary or Monday 1 hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Vine Bluff Cemetery in Nephi, UT.
