Together Again
June Willoughby Shurtliff, our loving mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2011 just two days after her 92nd birthday.
June was born January 27, 1919 in Rigby, Idaho to Samuel Leroy Willoughby and Ella LaRene Burningham. She grew up in Provo. She married Wilford Miller in 1935 and they were blessed with two children, ReNae (Ron) Pickett and Steve Miller, both of whom preceded her in death. Her husband, Wilford, was killed during World War II while fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. She married F. L. "Short" Shurtliff on September 4, 1945. They had a daughter, Patricia Ann, in 1947 and the family was later sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on May 16, 1952. The family settled in Provo.
June was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She loved serving others, especially the youth. She taught mutual for 35 years. She enjoyed sewing and making quilts. She also embroidered and made beautiful ceramics. June and Short helped for many years to make sweepstakes-winning floats for the Provo 4th of July and other parades around the state. She was well-remembered for her fabulous cooking. She often prepared large and delicious dinners to support efforts on behalf of the youth and her husband's hunting trips.
June was always kind and loving to everyone. She loved to visit with her friends and family. Her family was very important to her and we always felt of her unconditional love and support.
June and Short resided in Mapleton during the last 30 years of their lives. Their yard was always beautifully adorned with flowers of every shade and hue grown in their own greenhouse. They loved their life in Mapleton and the wonderful friends and neighbors they met there.
June is survived by a sister, Elaine Wake, of Ogden, a daughter, Pat (Stanford) Shaw, of Orem, 13 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four siblings and two of her children.
June's family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the many neighbors, friends, family and caregivers who have always been there to help, comfort, and uplift. We are especially grateful to all the staff of Courtyard at Jamestown, with special thanks to LuGene, Max and Bret from 1st Choice. We also appreciate the kind help from 1st Choice Hospice during the last days of mom's life.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 4th at 11:00 AM in the Mapleton 1st Ward Chapel, (White Church), 31 W Maple St, in Mapleton. Family and friends may attend a viewing at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 AM prior to the funeral services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery. Services are being handled by Wheeler Mortuary of Springville. In lieu of flowers, may we suggest donations to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.
