Joyce Pierce Poulsen, 81, long-time resident of Springville, Utah and recently of Gilbert, Arizona, peacefully passed away in the quiet morning hours of Saturday, March 24, 2012. She was born May 26, 1930 in Victor, Emery County, Utah to Vernon Winifred Pierce and Thelma Davis Pierce. She married Ralph Johnson Poulsen on November 7, 1952 in the Salt Lake City LDS temple. Ralph preceded her in death on March 19, 1993.
Joyce will be remembered for her kindness and compassion. Her hands fed many people from the kitchen of her home, where she would also cheer on her favorite baseball and football teams. She absolutely loved music - any conversation could cue a song lyric. Her varied birdhouse collection attests to the pleasure she found gardening and bird-watching. Joyce was gifted in needlework, sewing, and quilting, and she was awarded for her creations. But children and young people were her ultimate joy. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she delighted in teaching children through Scouting and church programs.
Joyce is survived by her two children: Shanna (Ted) Morgan of Gilbert, AZ, and Mikel Poulsen of Seattle, WA; two sisters: Shirley Muse of Walla Walla, WA and Betty Jean Stanley of Tooele, UT; three granddaughters: Andrea (Seth) Salima (FL), Michelle (Blake) Bentley (AZ), and Lara (Tyler) Broadbent (NE); six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Joyce was also later blessed with a second family - Rowena and Lee Ramos, Wade, Rose, Neil, and the caring people at Hope Care in Gilbert, AZ whom she loved so dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph and her brother Ron.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South in Springville. Friends and family may call at Wheeler beginning at 9:30 a.m., prior to the services. Burial will be in the Spanish Fork Cemetery.
