Joyce Hansen Hulce, 93, died February 18, 2009 of causes incident to age. Joyce was born on July 22, 1915 to George and Winifred Kate Pollard Hansen in Green Bay, Wisconsin. She graduated from Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana, where she met her future husband, Harry Hulce. Harry and Joyce were married on October 27, 1935.
As a young woman, Joyce suffered from severe asthma. As a result, Harry and Joyce and their three oldest children moved from Indiana to Utah in 1947 to begin a new life. The story of their move was published in the Lady's Home Journal in November, 1951.
Joyce worked as a Nebo School District School Lunch Manager. She was loved by the students, and became an honorary member of the Springville High School "Knife, Fork and Spoon Club" in the late 1960's. She retired in 1974.
Joyce was a member of the Springville Community Church, and an active member of the Springville Play House, appearing in many local plays over the years. She wrote poetry that was published in national magazines. She was an avid reader, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Joyce was an excellent cook and hostess. Her children remember pot roasts, fried chicken, donuts and divinity. She regularly fed the less fortunate. Joyce was an extremely thoughtful person who never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or holiday. She spent her life serving others.
Joyce is survived by her brother, Robert Hansen of Indiana, her children, Harry M. (Yvonne) Hulce of Tremonton, Utah, Margaret (Nick) Christensen of Springville, Kenny (Patty) Hulce of Springville, Jim (Carol) Hulce of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, son-in-law Harold Smith of Springville, and daughter-in-law Ila Ann Hulce of Springville. She is survived by 20 grandchildren and 44 great and great-great grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Harry, her parents, her brothers George, Harry and Milton, her sisters, Lillian, Cleone, Winifred, Martha and Agnes, her daughter Marian Smith, her son Robert Hulce, a granddaughter Michelle Hulce and a grandson, Adam Peterson.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Springville Community Church, 245 South 200 East, Springville, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Springville City Cemetery, 400 West 200 South, Springville.
