Jane Cherrington Hinckley

d. February 17, 2015

April 30, 1929 - February 13, 2015

Loving wife, mother and grandmother, Jane Cherrington Hinckley, passed away February 13, 2015 in South Jordan, UT at the age of 85 after a brief illness.

Jane was born in Provo, UT on April 30, 1929. She was the fifth and youngest child of Hilda Wheeler Cherrington and Amyot Willard Cherrington. She was raised on "the farm" on the East bench of Springville, UT. They raised chickens and eggs, cows for milk and butter, and acres of fruit trees. This is where she learned to play the piano, did farm work and learned how to pick "Cherrington Cherries". She graduated from Springville High School and attended Utah State. She married Merlin J. Norton in the Salt Lake Temple. They had two sons Michael J. Norton and Howard Cherrington Norton. They lived in Springville, UT until 1956 when they moved to the Midwest and lived in ten different places in Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota over the next ten years until they moved to Omaha, NE where they later divorced in 1967.

In April of 1971 she married William R. Hinckley in the Manti, UT Temple and combined their children for a total of seven children and one "foster"-daughter. Bill and Jane lived in Omaha, NE, until Bill passed away in October 1989. Bill was the Director of the Boys' Clubs of Omaha and served on the Boys' Clubs of America Board. Jane had many jobs in her life. She was a farm worker, truck driver, clerk, dental assistant, homemaker, secretary and seminary teacher. Jane later moved to Springville, UT, where she built her home on "the farm".

Jane held many church callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: Sunday School, Young Women's, Primary President, Ward and Stake Relief Society President, Ward and Stake Organist and early morning Seminary Teacher. She served a Temple Mission to the Chicago Illinois Temple and was a shift coordinator at the Provo Utah Temple. She and her husband Bill, who served as Stake President in Omaha, had the opportunity of hosting many church General Authorities in their home including Pres. Spencer W. Kimball and his wife, Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson and many others.

Over the last four years Jane has resided at Reid's Park Place in Springville and Carrington Court Memory Care Unit in S. Jordan. We would like to thank all of her caregivers at home, Reid's Park Place, Carrington Court and from Millcreek Hospice for the kindness and loving care that you gave Jane. Jane also had the greatest neighbors in the world in Scott and Linda Sumsion and family, a wonderful friend, Kathy Vaughn that visited her right until the end of Jane's life, and a daughter-in-law supreme in Chris, who was always there for anything and everything.

Jane is survived by her sons, Michael J. Norton (Michelle), Howard Cherrington Norton (Christine), her step-children Ronald H. Hinckley (Cathy), William "Scott" Hinckley (Becky), Teri Hinckley Chase-Dunn (Ian), Deborah Hinckley George, Richard "Shane" Hinckley (Amy), thirty grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren with two more on the way and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband William R. Hinckley, her parents, her brothers Jack and Bert, by her sisters Captola and Carol and by four nephews.

A viewing will be held Thursday Feb. 19th at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S. Springville, UT, from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral services will be at the Springville 7th Ward Chapel at 1785 E. 400 S. Springville, UT, (on "the farm") at 10am Friday Feb. 20th, preceded by a viewing at 9am. Internment at Rexburg City Cemetery, Rexburg, ID, 1pm Saturday Feb. 21st.
