James Connell Matheson, 101, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, July 18, 2015 surrounded by family. Born in Parowan, Utah May 5, 1914 to William John and Margaret Mamie Connell Matheson. Moved with his family to Duncan, Arizona at the age of 6, and spent his formative years in the beautiful Gila Valley. He married Claris Cameron March 7, 1938 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Preceded in death by his wife, June 19, 2009 and his son, William J Matheson. Survived by children Audria Buchanan, James C Matheson, Margaret (Norman) Gardner, Kenneth Lee (Julie) Matheson, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and brother Mac C. Matheson.
James was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in the California Mission from 1935 to 1937 and in other leadership and teaching positions throughout his life in the numerous locations where they lived.
Retired from Bechtel Corporation having worked in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, and New Guinea. With only a high school education he earned the respect of his superiors and fellow workers for many cost saving, innovative ideas. He encouraged his posterity to pursue educational goals. After retirement, he served in the Provo LDS Temple. He had the gift of teaching and used his knowledge to bless others. He enjoyed working with his hands repairing cars for those in need, planting a garden, harvesting, and generously sharing talents with neighbors, friends, and family.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel located at 245 South 600 East, Springville, UT 84663 with a viewing from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 am. A viewing will also be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, UT 84663. Interment will be at the Springville City Cemetery.
