1922 ~ 2014
Homer C. Fletcher passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, of old age just 25 days short of his 92nd birthday. His parents were Herman C. Fletcher and Grace M. (O'Hara). He was named after his father and he had one sister Lorraine. He was called JR most of his childhood but was later known as Fletcher or Homer (the name is mother preferred) through the rest of his life. He legally changed his name in the late 1990's. He was married to his loving wife Susie (Gwenyce Devins) Fletcher for more than 50 years until her passing in 2003 and had three children. Timothy D. was the oldest but sadly lived for only a few days. Homer is survived by his other son Gary L. of Orem, UT and daughter Susan K. of Los Angeles, CA. He has 5 living grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Homer had a very exciting and varied life that included becoming a merchant marine at the beginning of World War II. During WWII he was involved in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was twice on ships that were sunk; one destroyed by rough seas and the other was hit by an enemy torpedo. He was one of only three surviving sailors on the first sinking. He circumvented the globe twice and loved to share stories of wild adventures from that time of his life. He married when he returned from the war and resumed working at the Pacific Bell phone company as an engineer until his retirement more than 40 years later.
Homer was a Freemason since the 1950's being one of his lodge's youngest masters and later in life attaining the 32 order and joined the Scottish Rite. He was also a Shriner. One of his other passions was scuba diving. He was one of the earliest members and actively involved in the National Associations of Underwater Instructors from the late 1960's until the 1980's. He was still diving in his late 70's. He received numerous awards two of which were the Dr. Charlie Brown Memorial Award in 1990 and was as an inaugural member of the NAUI Hall of Honor. He instructed military and oil rig divers and helped cofound the Cresci Sub Club in Japan.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 12th at 1 pm. He will be buried next to his dear wife Susie at the Springville City Cemetery on 400 South at 200 West.
