George Edward Schmidt

April 8, 1926 — January 27, 2009

George Edward Schmidt, age 82 of Springville, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in Payson, Utah of congestive heart failure.



George was born April 8, 1926 in Rochester, New York to Adolph Schmidt and Annetta Butterfield Schmidt. He married Pauline Ruth Gehret August 2, 1947 in Rochester, New York.



George and Polly joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on April 7th, 1979. On April 30th, 1980 they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Washington, D.C. Temple.



George lived the first part of his life in Rochester, New York working for Eastman Kodak Company for many years and raising a family there. He then moved to Springville, Utah on his retirement in 1983. After retirement George became bored and found employment at Utah Service, which then became Sunroc in Springville. He worked there for an additional 22 years and retired this past year.



George is probably best known for his love and service to the Boy Scouts of America. Having started in his youth he has dedicated over 70 years to Scouting. He has served as Assistant Scout Master, Scout Master, District Advancement Chairman and many other positions. He received the Silver Beaver Award and many others. While living in Springville he has helped over 2,000 youth receive their Eagle Rank. His dedication and commitment to scouting will be remembered by many.



George is survived by his six sons; Edward, David, Christopher, Douglas, Raymond and Andrew; 21 Grandchildren; 8 Great Grandchildren; His Brother Charles and his sisters Beatrice Kane and Katherine Stevens. George was preceded in death by his wife Polly just this past November.



Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Kolob 5th Ward, 1230 S 500 E, Springville, UT. Friends may call on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E 200 S, Springville or Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
