George Calvin Puckett

d. March 20, 2013

1924 ~ 2013

George Calvin Puckett was born April 3, 1924, to Edgar "D" Puckett and Georgianna Hardy Puckett in Twin Falls, Idaho. He passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013, at home of natural causes related to chronic illnesses and aging. He would have been 89 years old on April 3 of this year. He graduated from Oakley High School before the family moved to Alameda, California, during World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps for three years flying in a B-29 over Southeast Asia as the radio operator, and flew on one of the last bombing missions of the war.

He met his future wife, Elaine Howlett, while both were majoring in music at Brigham Young University. The G.I. Bill and playing in dance orchestras made it possible for him to attend. He received his B.A. in 1950 and the couple married and moved to Hinckley, Utah, where he taught music in the high school and then taught in Lyman, Wyoming. They moved to Springville, Utah, in 1953. He received his M.A. from BYU and then his Ed. PhD. in Public School Administration. He was assigned principal of Payson High School, serving five and a half-years when he interrupted his employment in Nebo School District with a call to serve as Superintendent of L.D.S. Church Schools in the Tongan Isles, returning in 1972. He was assigned Springville High School principal where he served eight years until his retirement.

His church callings were numerous: Bishop and stake high council in Springville Stake, Bishop and mission counselor in Tonga, and Vienna, Austria, branch presidency at M.T. C, stake high counselor in BYU stake and BYU-H stake. He loved teaching and had a wonderful friendly sense of humor. George and Elaine served three Church Educational Service missions in Hawaii and Vienna, Austria.

He is survived by his wife and children: Joan Johnson (John), Brigham City, Utah, Richard (Lorie), and Allen (Cara), all of Springville, 16 grandchildren and 9 great-children (with 2 more on the way). Also surviving is his sister, Nola (Charles) Jackson of Burley, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kay, Eldon, and Oscar.

Viewings will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, (211 East 200 South in Springville) and Saturday morning from 10:00 until 10:45 at the Springville Stake House (245 South 600 East). The funeral will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
