1931-2013

Eugene Menzies Johnson of Springville, Utah passed away March 22, 2013, from the effects of Alzheimer's disease. He died in the arms of his wife and surrounded by his children. He was born March 29,1931, the seventh of seven children in Provo, Utah to Einar H. Johnson and Pearl May Menzies. He was raised in Provo where he attended school, graduating from Provo High in 1949. He graduated from BYU with a teaching certificate after serving in the U.S. Army for 2 years and was deployed to Korea where he was in the transportation corps. He became company clerk and while there had many experiences that enhanced his faith in the Lord.

He married Kathleen Lyon September 24,1954, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they had 4 sons, Eugene Martin, Jeffrey L. (deceased), Dell L. (Cynthia) and Timothy L. (Brenda). He is survived by his wife and 3 sons as well as daughters-in-law Ann Lovell Johnson, Cynthia and Brenda, 18 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and brother, Einar H. Johnson Jr. He was preceded in death by son Jeffrey, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Gene loved playing softball and basketball and the teams he played on earned many awards. It was through his interest in sports and the support of his teammates that he became interested in the scouting program where he earned his Eagle Scout award. Through these activities he became interested in the LDS church and was baptized at the age of 14.

Gene had decided that he wanted to become a school teacher when he was in the 3rd grade and he never wavered from that decision. He loved teaching and also every student he taught. He believed school should be interesting and fun as well as intellectually stimulating. He taught 6th and 7th grades for 36 years in Springville, loving every minute of it.

He was active in the LDS church, having served as Elders Quorum President, Scout Master, High Councilor, Bishop, Stake Mission President and Sunday School Teacher. He and his wife served 2 service missions. He joined the American Legion and loved his fellow veteran buddies, enjoying performing military rites for deceased veterans.

A viewing will be held Thursday, March 28th, from 6-8 pm at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South Springville. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 29th, at the 9th Ward Chapel, 355 East Center, Springville, at 11:00 am with a viewing from 10:00-10:45 am. Interment will be at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery with Military Rites by the American Legion.
