Elvin Gene Sumsion passed away January 26, 2008 at his home in Springville after a long illness. He was born November 10, 1928 to Earnest and Belle Anthon Sumsion.
Gene attended schools in Springville, was a member of the Veta Car Club and loved his fast, green Studebaker. He started work at the early age of 14 and married Fawn Hutchison in 1948. He was a long time employee of Geneva Steel and was one of the first farmers in Utah County to purchase large new equipment for his farm. He did much custom work for many farmers. He was known for his hard work, honesty, integrity and the ability to put a smile on your face with one of his crazy stories. He was an active member of the AFC board for many years.
Gene married Elayne Caras in 1996 and she has faithfully taken care of him for many years during his illness. When he became unable to climb up on his equipment, his hobby turned to horses. The large photos on the wall of his room at the hospital provided much comfort and spirit to him as well as conversation when friends came to visit.
He is survived by his wife, Elayne and children: Roger (Pat) Sumsion, Linda (Rick) Witney, Connie Sumsion, Carolyn Allen, Craig (Becky) Sumsion; stepchildren: Jeff (Corine) Terry, Brian (Robyn) Terry, and Ron (Teresa) Tabot; he has 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Keith Sumsion of Springville and Russell Sumsion of Richland, Washington; sisters, Elsie Perry of California, Beverly Miller of Arizona and Suzanne Andrews of Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, sisters Lucille Brown, Teresa Sargent and Joy Mitchell.
Thanks to Vista Care, Dr. Lynn Bateman and Dr. John Frischknecht for many years of care; to Bert Bearnson's special visits; Murff for the bread of life; Casey for her tender touch and love; Ron and Don Sorensen whom he called his second sons; Margaret for her love; and all friends who came to visit.
We know he will be extremely busy in heaven doing much harvesting and planting in heaven, but he will also enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation.
May the angels watch over you, bring to your heavy heart peace of mind and continuous love. Sleep well my dear one.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 12 Noon at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South in Springville. There will be a viewing held Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and again Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
