1920 ~ 2012
Edward Henry Heidbrink passed away on October 22, 2012 in Bedford, Virginia after living a contented life which began on January 3, 1920, in Union, Missouri. As a child, he enjoyed paddlewheel steamboat trips up and down the Mississippi River. He also enjoyed watching the Cardinals play baseball and he kept a nice collection of albums of baseball cards and autographs of various players who came to St. Louis. His collection included autographed cards by Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig. When he went away to the army in WWII, his parents had to move and they threw his "junk" away.
Ed majored in accounting at Missouri University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration just in time to be drafted into the army for WWII. Of course the military planned to use his finance skills, but on the day they were shipping out to finance school, they couldn't find a pair of shoes to fit him, so he was sent to another school at a later date. He became a Staff Sergeant and spent most of the war teaching celestial navigation to the bomber crews.
After the war, Ed decided to go West to Denver, Colorado. He spent the next eight years seeking better and better employment at various places in Denver and Ft. Morgan. He met Dorothy Graves while they were both working at the REA in Ft. Morgan, and they married on December 29, 1951. In March of 1954, he decided to start his own accounting practice in Ft. Morgan, so he and Dorothy settled there to raise their six children. Dorothy and Ed lived in Ft. Morgan until 1993.
Ed was an active member of the Ft. Morgan Elks Lodge and served as secretary for nearly 40 years. When Dorothy died in 1995, Ed decided to move into the Elks National Home in Bedford, Virginia. He was well liked and well cared for at the Home for his final 17 years.
Ed is survived by his six children, Sharon Sweet, Larry, Gary, Craig, Richard, and Ronda Gardner; 28 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.
