Doris Brown Hicks was born in Lovell, Wyoming on September 30, 1917 to Achilles and Myrtle Boyce Brown. On October 30, 2012 she passed away peacefully in her home in Springville, Utah. She lived a long and exciting life, never drifting far from her pioneer roots as a great granddaughter of Ebenezer Brown, a prominent early Utah Pioneer settler. She married Harry L. Hicks on April 19, 1934. Their union was later solemnized in the LDS Salt Lake Temple.
Together, she and Harry raised four children. She was proud of her extended family, enjoying a close relationship with her 22 grandchildren, 105 great grandchildren, and 54 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Sherry (Ralph), her brothers Larry, Scott, Jim and sisters, Curtie Orr and Lola Tracy. She is survived by her children Carla Rowley (Ralph), Raulon (Sharon), and Michael (Roberta).
Doris was raised on the Medicine Wheel Ranch located in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. It is there she learned the important values of hard work, honesty, and love for her fellow men. In 1933, at age 16, her family moved to Salmon, Idaho. She soon met and married Harry and together they carved out their existence in the rough-and-tumble mining and ranching communities in Idaho. She taught her children the same values of hard work, self-reliance and a love of God that she learned as a child growing up on her dad's cattle ranch.
As a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Doris loved and served those in her community and church. She was employed as the Idaho Lemhi County Homemaker for nine years beginning in 1970, and earned the distinction of "Homemaker of the Year." As a county homemaker, she spent many hours helping teach practical-living skills to young parents and providing care to those who were unable to help themselves due to illness or old-age. She was called to serve a full-time mission for her Church in New Mexico and Arizona. She loved to work amongst the Native Americans and brought the love and peace of the Savior Jesus Christ to many of her friends through her strong faith and testimony.
During the final decades of her life, Doris loved to travel throughout the Western United States, often taking roads less-traveled. She visited her family and grandchildren, her old stomping grounds in Wyoming, rode the Grand Canyon on horseback, and even made her way to Hawaii to soak-up some sun. Typifying her character was the .357 Magnum handgun she carried in her purse for protection during her travels. "I could pound nails at a hundred yards with my rifle when I was only 12 years old!" she exclaimed to the gentleman who sold her the gun.
Doris' spunky and happy nature will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held in Springville, Utah on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 11:00a.m. with a viewing staring at 10:00 a.m. the LDS Church meetinghouse located at 1460 East 900 South.
