Donald Ferris Allan, Artist
Mapleton, Utah - Donald Ferris Allan, 86, passed away on July 10, 2013 in Payson, Utah. Don was one of seven children born to Henry Kirby Allan and Sarah Jane Barker. He was born March 2, 1927 in Springville, Utah, served in the military during World War II, a mission in the Northern States mission, and attended Springville High School and Brigham Young University. After marrying Thora Whiting in 1950, Don and Thora moved to New York City in 1951 allowing Don to study art at the National Academy of Art, the Art Students League, and the Salamagundi Club. Years later he studied at the Porte Royale in Paris, France. In his 60-year career as a fine artist, he has sold more than 10,000 paintings thereby improving the lives of thousands. He also was awarded numerous prizes and medals for his painting in various art shows and competitions including the 1978 Bronze Medal from the National Academy of Art in New York City. One art critic suggested that, "...a desire to bring beauty and happiness into the world impels Mr. Allan to paint such beautiful paintings..."
Along with his artistic talents Don and Thora served the Mormon Church in New York City with great enthusiasm and effectiveness. In the Manhattan Ward, Don and Thora were among the most beloved and cherished members, offering their love to hundreds of New Yorkers.
Don was one of the kindest, most humble individuals, sharing his love with everyone whose lives he touched. His creative problem solving skills and thorough guidance in all matters, were among his most outstanding talents.
Don was preceded in death by his loving wife Thora, and is survived by six children (Don Allan, Robert Allan, Karen Allan Foote, John Allan, Mary Allan Silvera, and Debbie Bacon Hoffheins). Of his five brothers and two sisters, Don is survived by one sister (Lenore Allan Brinkerhoff) and one brother (LaVerl Allan), and by 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 at 1 p.m. in the LDS Chapel at 475 North 1600 West, Mapleton. There will be a viewing held Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 82 West 400 North, Mapleton and at the church on Friday from 11:30 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial will follow in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
