1949~2014
Dennis Mark Bacon, 64, of Mapleton, Utah died Monday morning, May 12, 2014 in Provo, Utah after a short valiant battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren.
Dennis was born to Chancy and Donna Mae Johnson Bacon on September 28, 1949, in Boise, Idaho. He attended Whitney and Monroe Elementary, South Junior High School, and Borah High School, all in Boise, graduating with a class of 488 in 1967. He married his high school sweetheart, Shannon Genille Lough, in 1968. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple. In 1971, he received his Bachelor's in Music Education from Brigham Young University. He was a band director for 23 years at various schools throughout Utah at the elementary through college levels. He received a Master's of Music in 1979 and a Master's of Education in Educational Leadership with a certificate in administration in 1995, all from BYU. With that degree, he shifted his career focus to educational administration and was principal and assistant principal in both Wasatch and Alpine School Districts. He was currently serving as assistant principal at Orem Junior High School at the time of his death.
Dennis was a faithful lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he served in various callings in wards and stakes. Some of his callings included choir director, ward music leader, teacher, scoutmaster, ward membership clerk, ward mission leader, bishopric, bishop, high council, and stake presidency. He was currently serving on the high council in the YSA 19th Stake in Provo. No matter what his calling, he was always a home teacher as well. He and Shannon developed a deep love for family history, researching and taking names to the temple to do temple work for their ancestors, involving the grandchildren in performing baptisms and confirmations. Dennis was also very involved in preparing young men and women in his stake for missionary service.
He and Shannon always seemed to make time to be together doing the things they loved including golfing, fishing, and riding their three-wheel motorcycle. Boulder Mountain was his favorite place to fish; however, for short fishing trips after work or on Saturdays, Dennis and Shannon would go to Huntington Reservoir, CC Pond, or Electric Lake and on occasion, the grandchildren would accompany them. The grandchildren really loved fishing with grandpa. Dennis and Shannon always seemed to catch more fish than they could use and shared them with friends and neighbors. One golf season, Dennis and Shannon both got a hole in one, at the same golf course, on different holes. Another of their favorite activities was driving to Fairview for a cheeseburger and hot fudge sundae. The grandchildren occasionally went with them. In the past 15 years, one of his favorite activities was to find several different fun convertibles for Shannon to drive. Every 2 or 3 years, Dennis and Shannon would vacation in McCall, Idaho, for travel and golfing.
Dennis is survived by his loving eternal companion, his children Curtis William (Adela), Stephen Mark (Corrina), Lorraine Mae Robinson Mason (Evan), Brigham Dennis "Denny" (Ruby), Christopher Alfred, Donna Shanille Mortimer (Spencer), daughters-in-law Rebecca Woolley Bacon and Kristi Bacon Zirbes, 25 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and another expected in July. He is also survived by his 2 sisters, Wynifred (Lee) Trentman and Rochelle (Brent) Pfleger. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Rollo, son-in-law Robbie Robinson, and grandsons Jaylen Zane Bacon and Dallin McKade Bacon.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Mapleton North Stake Center at 475 N 1600 W, Mapleton. There will be a viewing at the church on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm and Friday from 12:15 to 1:45 prior to services.
