He married his "girl", Doris Rowley, on March 16, 1951. Together they raised seven children, James (Jan), Allan (Valerie), Linda (David), Lynn Ann, Michael (Chris), Steven (Laura) and Jean (Dan). He has 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. His wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive him. He was a High Priest of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He served as a temple worker and in many church callings, including scouting, quorum leadership and clerical positions.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially time spent with family camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting.
