1925 ~ 2013
Clarence Martin Townsend passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 7, 2013. He left behind his wife Irene of 62 years, one brother and one sister, 9 children, 53 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
He was born November 28, 1925 in a log cabin in Lovell, Wyoming where he spent his youth. After graduating from high school, he spent two years with the US Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater, and then fulfilled an honorable mission for the LDS Church in Argentina from 1947-50. He met his eternal companion Irene in Argentina and following his mission began a courtship, leading to their marriage in the Salt Lake Temple in 1951. He then began a 25-year career with the US Border Patrol, which lead his growing family from Wyoming to North Dakota and eventually to El Paso, Texas where his children spent their formative years. As a pilot for the Border Patrol, he was in the air each morning by dawn and logged over 24,000 flight hours. After retirement, the family lived in Lovell, Provo, Wallsburg, and Spanish Fork.
Clarence loved the outdoors, especially the Bighorn Mountains in his beloved northern Wyoming, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. Each summer, during trips not to be forgotten, he brought his family back to Wyoming to spend time with his parents and siblings. He was active in the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings, blessing the lives of many, especially the youth of the Church. He showed love and concern for his family, who were his pride and joy.
Clarence is survived by his wife Irene, 9 children, Clarene (Marlan) Hansen; Martin (Denise) Townsend; Susan (Jon) Anderson; Judy (Bruce) Olson; Debbie (Bob) Crockett; Scot (Carolyn) Townsend; Kristy (Jeff) Taylor; Jeanne (Matt) Singerman; and Tamara (James) Faucette; 53 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and growing; brother Tim and sister Connie. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Marlin, Lyle and Nate and sisters Sharon and Verna Jean.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11 am in the Wallsburg Ward chapel, 494 West Main Canyon Road, Wallsburg, Utah, where friends may call for a viewing at 9:45 am prior to the service. An additional viewing will be Friday, October 11 from 6-8 pm at the Wheeler Mortuary, located at 211 East 200 South, Springville, Utah. Interment will be in the Wallsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those wishing to contribute to make donations to the missionary fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
