Calvin Johnson Sumsion passed away December 28th, 2014. He was born March 4th, 1942 in Provo, Utah to LaCelle Alleman Sumsion and Julia Johnson. He was raised in Springville and graduated from high school in 1960. He served an honorable mission in the Northeast British Mission where Grant Thorne was his mission president.
He married Nolene Hjorth on June 6th 1963. He graduated from BYU in 1966. He went to graduate school at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. He graduated in 1969 with his graduate degree in graphic design. After graduating, he worked in Phoenix, Arizona and California. He taught at University of Utah, University of Hawaii, West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. He moved to Utah and taught at ITT.
He is survived by his wife, Nolene, and 11 children -- Grant Sumsion, Julie Sumsion, Nathan Sumsion, Matthew Sumsion, Jason Sumsion, Sarah Lam, Rachel Platt, Aaron Sumsion, Rebecca Biggs, Anna Crutchfield, and James Sumsion and their spouses and 30 grandchildren, including three currently serving missions. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Sumsion Rawle.
Calvin served faithfully in his callings in the church and was dedicated to being in the temple.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 1 p.m. in the Grove Ward Chapel at 450 E. 200 S. in Pleasant Grove. There will be a viewing held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 82 W. 400 N., in Mapleton. There will also be a viewing held Saturday at the church one hour prior to the services.
