Byron Lorin Cottam was born on January 22, 1927 in Escalante, Utah, the son of Lorin and Meleta Shirts Cottam. He passed away on Friday, May 8 from bone cancer. He graduated from Escalante High School in 1945. He then served in the United States Army from 1945-1946 in Germany. He then served a LDS mission to the North California Mission. It was there he met his sweetheart Sheila Winters. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 30, 1949. She passed away in 2004.
Bryon worked on the Winters family farm in Hoytsville, Utah for 6 years and then moved to Springville, Utah. He worked for Nebo School District for 28 years.
He served in the Scouting program as Scout Master and Order of the Arrow leader. He also served as Sunday School President, High Priest Group leader and assistant ward clerk. He was an ordinance worker in the Provo temple for 15 years.
Bryon married Joyce Mitchell October 29, 2005.
Bryon was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rhea Cottam Rush, and his beloved Sheila.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cottam, Spanish Fork; sons; Robert (Pat) Cottam of Spanish Fork and Lorvin (Geri) Cottam of Price, Utah. He is also survived by his brother, Garl (Patsy) Cottam, West Mountain, Utah; sisters; Larene Neil, Dallas, Texas and Elna (Dennis) Creek of West Valley, Utah. Byron has 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South Springville, Utah. Services will be held on Tuesday May 12, 2009 11:00 a.m. at the Spanish Fork Stake Center, 1006 East 200 South, Spanish Fork, Utah, with a viewing prior to the service from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah.
The family would like to thank Vista Care for all the tender loving care they gave to Byron. This includes the Drs, the nurses and the aides.
