Afton Merle Lindsey

Afton Wonnacott Lindsey was born October 8, 1912 to Frank and Pearl Wonnacott in Salt Lake City, UT. She passed away in her sleep on June 15 at age 96.



As a young woman, Afton moved to southern California where she married and raised her family. She returned to Utah with her family in 2007 to live in Mapleton. Throughout her life she was very active in church and community activities. While in California, she served two stake missions for the LDS Church, as well as numerous callings on ward and stake levels. She had a passion for missionary work and wrote a monthly letter to all the missionaries in her ward for more than thirty years. She also served her community for many years in the PTA and as PTA President at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. She was active in many Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Camps throughout her life. In Arcadia, CA where she lived for fifty-five years, she was elected to the Progress Action Council and the Senior Citizens Commission. She championed Senior Citizens rights, especially the right to continue working after age sixty-five. She was recognized twice by the Arcadia Mayor and City Council for her contributions.



She is survived by her two sons and their wives Ken and Tammy Lindsey, Parker, Arizona, Rob and Christine Lindsey, Mapleton, Utah, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a sister Norma Wilcken, Phoenix, Arizona, a brother Vaughn Wonnacott, Salt Lake, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Lorraine Wonnacott, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Bill and Winona Wonnacott, St. George, Utah and many nieces and nephews.



As she requested, a graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009 in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Viewing for family and friends will precede the service from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Ridgedale Ward Chapel at 3400 S. 1100 E. in Salt Lake City, Utah.
